Join Wax Merchant
Wax Merchant Operations Assistant
We’re looking for our first employee to join us at an exciting stage of the business as we move into our first premises in Altrincham.
About Wax Merchant
Wax Merchant is an independent online record store specialising in underground electronic music.
After 18 months of running Wax Merchant from home, we’re taking the next step and moving into our first premises in Altrincham. We’re now looking for our first employee to join us at an exciting stage of the business.
You’ll play an important role in the day-to-day running of Wax Merchant, helping us keep orders moving, stock organised and things running smoothly. The role will be hands-on, with a particular focus on picking and packing online orders, processing incoming stock and keeping everything organised behind the scenes.
As Wax Merchant grows, there may be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and hours over time as the role and needs of the business develop.
What You'll Be Doing
- Picking and packing online customer orders accurately and efficiently.
- Using our internal systems to process incoming stock and flag discrepancies.
- Handling, shelving and organising records.
- Maintaining an organised picking, packing and stock area.
- Assisting with product tagging when required.
- Assisting with resolving order or stock queries and flagging any issues that require further action.
- Keeping up to date with upcoming releases, represses and restocks across the artists, labels and genres we cover, and sharing relevant recommendations and information with Amie and James to help inform future buying decisions.
- Helping with customer open days and events when required.
- The role is very hands-on, with most of the working day spent on your feet picking, packing, handling and organising records, including regularly lifting and moving boxes of records.
- Supporting with other reasonable tasks and responsibilities as needed across the day-to-day running of the business.
- There may also be opportunities to contribute to Wax Merchant’s content and community activity where relevant.
Full training will be provided on Wax Merchant’s systems and processes.
About You
A strong passion for the records, artists, labels and underground electronic music Wax Merchant specialises in.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Is genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about underground electronic music.
- Has a good awareness of what’s happening across the underground electronic music scene, including upcoming releases, represses and restocks.
- Already understands records and how records themselves and sleeves should be handled and stored.
- Is trustworthy and understands that customer, business and stock information should be treated with discretion and kept confidential.
- Has excellent attention to detail and works methodically.
- Is reliable, organised and able to work efficiently at pace while maintaining a high level of accuracy. You’ll take pride in keeping things organised, notice small details and be proactive about flagging any issues or discrepancies.
- Is comfortable working closely as part of a small team.
- Is happy working in an active, hands-on environment and being on their feet for most of the working day, including regularly handling boxes of records.
- Can follow processes carefully and, as they develop in the role, use their own initiative.
- Has the right to work in the UK.
You could be a record collector, DJ, producer or simply someone with a genuine interest in the music and records we sell. What’s most important is that you already have a strong passion for the music we sell.
Hours & Availability
The role is 21 hours per week across three fixed weekdays.
Normal working hours will be 9am-5pm, including a one-hour unpaid lunch. Monday availability is essential, as this is typically our busiest day for online order fulfilment.
The other two fixed weekdays will be agreed with the successful candidate.
There may occasionally be opportunities for additional paid hours during busy periods, including occasional Saturday work for open days or events. These would be agreed in advance and paid in addition to contracted hours.
There may also be an opportunity to increase contracted hours in the future as the business grows.
